EFL & National League To Meet Regarding Promotion Restructure

The EFL and the National League are set to meet over the coming weeks, ahead of a potential proposition, which would see a reshuffle of the promotion/relegation places between League Two and National League divisions.

Currently, there are two relegation spots in League Two, whilst there is one automatic promotion spot, and one play-off spot in the fifth tier, and fans for a number of years now, have been calling for a reshuffle. The reshuffle would see three sides relegated to the fifth tier, whilst a second automatic promotion spot would be added into the National League, creating a three-up-three-down format, like we see in the Championship.

This report emerged from an article by The Derbyshire Times, but does state that any new proposal, would have to be agreed by the majority of EFL clubs, or to make it simpler (51%). Had the proposal been in place last season, the National League would have seen Wrexham AFC join Stockport County in the automatic promotion places, whilst Dagenham & Redbridge in eighth, would have qualified for the play-offs. Meanwhile, Barrow AFC would have joined Oldham Athletic & Scunthorpe United in being relegated to the fifth tier.

Therefore, there is still a bit of a way to go yet, but it is certainly possible that we could see a change in the format for new clubs entering/leaving the football league in the seasons to come.
